How the formulas work

Days left until each due date

F5=IF(C5="","",C5-$B$2)

Excel stores dates as day numbers, so the due date minus today's date is the number of days left. A negative number means it is past due. The $ signs keep every row pointing at the date in B2. Replace that date with =TODAY() to keep the tracker current every time you open it.

A status that updates itself

G5=IF(C5="","",IF(E5="Yes","Done",IF(F5<0,"Overdue",IF(F5<=2,"Due soon",IF(F5<=7,"This week","Later")))))

The IFs are checked in order and the first one that is true wins: done work shows Done even if its date has passed, then anything below 0 days is Overdue, 0 to 2 days is Due soon and so on. Add color with Home > Conditional Formatting > Highlight Cells Rules > Text that Contains, "Overdue".

How much of your grade is due this week

B18=SUMIFS(D5:D14,F5:F14,">=0",F5:F14,"<=7",E5:E14,"<>Yes")

SUMIFS adds the % of grade column for open assignments due in the next 7 days. "<>Yes" means anything except Yes, so empty Done cells count. In the sample, 12% of a grade is due in the next week (the essay draft and a problem set); the Chemistry midterm joins the total once it is 7 days away.

Your next deadline

B19=IFERROR(INDEX(SORT(FILTER(B5:F14,(E5:E14<>"Yes")*(C5:C14<>"")*(F5:F14>=0)),5,1),1,1),"All caught up")

FILTER keeps open assignments that are not overdue, SORT orders them by the 5th column of that block (Days left, smallest first) and INDEX takes the first name. Needs Excel 2021, Microsoft 365 or Google Sheets.

FAQ

How do I track assignments and due dates in Excel?

List each assignment with its due date, subtract today's date to get days left (=C5-TODAY()), and use IF to label it Overdue, Due soon or Later. This template does all of that and adds a weekly summary.

How do I count days until a due date in Excel?

Subtract today from the due date: =C5-TODAY(). For school days only, use =NETWORKDAYS(TODAY(),C5), which skips weekends and can also skip a list of holidays you give it.

Can I use this assignment tracker on my phone?

Yes. Open the .xlsx in the Excel mobile app, or upload it to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets. The formulas work in both.
