How the formulas work

Grade points from your school's scale

D4=IF(C4="","",IFNA(XLOOKUP(C4,$G$4:$G$15,$H$4:$H$15),"Not counted"))

XLOOKUP finds the letter in the scale (G4:G15) and returns its points. A grade that is not on the scale, like P for pass or W for withdrawn, shows Not counted and is left out of GPA, which is how most schools treat them. If a real letter shows Not counted, check for a typo or a stray space.

Credits that count, and quality points

B13=SUMIF(D4:D11,">=0",B4:B11)

Only rows with a number in Points count toward GPA credits, so the 1-credit pass/fail seminar is skipped. Quality points in column E are credits times points, and B14 adds them up.

Term GPA weighted by credits

B15=IF(B13=0,"",ROUND(B14/B13,2))

Quality points divided by GPA credits. In the sample, 58.2 quality points over 17 credits gives 3.42. Averaging the points column instead would treat a 1-credit class the same as a 4-credit one.

Cumulative GPA

B19=IF(B17+B13=0,"",ROUND((B17*B18+B14)/(B17+B13),2))

Your earlier GPA times its credits gives your earlier quality points. Add this term's, then divide by all credits. Use the GPA credits from your transcript, not total credits earned, because pass/fail and transfer credits often do not count toward GPA.

The GPA you need next term

B23=ROUND((B21*(B17+B13+B22)-(B17*B18+B14))/B22,2)

Target GPA times all the credits you will have after next term, minus the quality points you already have, divided by next term's credits. The sample needs 3.94 to move a 3.27 cumulative GPA up to 3.40 with 15 credits. A24 tells you if that is above the top of your scale.

FAQ

How do I calculate GPA in Excel?

Look up the grade points for each letter, multiply by the credits, add those up and divide by the total credits: =SUMPRODUCT(credits,points)/SUM(credits). This template does every step, including skipping pass/fail classes.

How do I calculate cumulative GPA?

Multiply your old GPA by its credits to get old quality points, add this term's quality points, and divide by the old credits plus this term's credits. Do not average the two GPAs unless both terms had exactly the same credits.

Why is my GPA different from my school's?

Usually the scale (A+ and minus grades), how repeated or pass/fail courses are handled, or extra weight for honors and AP classes. Change the scale in G4:H15 and the credits to match your school's rules.
