Excel NETWORKDAYS.INTL function

NETWORKDAYS.INTL counts the working days between two dates, both included, with the weekend you choose. Use it for six-day weeks, Friday and Saturday weekends, or part-time staff who work set days. Without a weekend argument it gives the same result as NETWORKDAYS.

=NETWORKDAYS.INTL(start_date, end_date, [weekend], [holidays])

Arguments

start_date
The first date. It is counted if it is a working day.
end_date
The last date. It is counted too. If it is before the start date, the result is negative.
weekend
Optional. A code (1 Sat-Sun, 2 Sun-Mon ... 7 Fri-Sat, 11 Sun only ... 17 Sat only) or a string such as "0000011", Monday to Sunday, where 1 is a day off.
holidays
Optional. A range of dates to leave out.

  1. Result: 21

    November 2026 has 21 weekdays, Monday to Friday.

  2. =NETWORKDAYS.INTL(B2,C2,11,$E$2:$E$3)

    Result: 23

    A six-day week with only Sundays off, minus the two holidays: 23 working days.

  3. =NETWORKDAYS.INTL(B2,C2,"1010111")

    Result: 8

    A part-timer on Tuesdays and Thursdays works 8 days in November.

  4. =NETWORKDAYS.INTL(B2,C2,7)

    Result: 22

    With a Friday and Saturday weekend the count is 22, because November 2026 has five Sundays and Mondays.

How to use NETWORKDAYS.INTL

  1. Put the start and end dates in cells.
  2. Type =NETWORKDAYS.INTL(start,end,weekend,holidays).
  3. Use a weekend code or a seven-digit string, Monday first.
  4. Press Enter.

Common NETWORKDAYS.INTL mistakes

Forgetting that both ends count

A Monday to Friday span in one week returns 5, not 4. Subtract 1 if you want days elapsed.

A pattern string without quotes

Type "1010111" with quotes. As a number it is read as a weekend code and returns #NUM! unless it happens to be valid.

Holidays on days off

A holiday that falls on a weekend day is not subtracted again, so it does not change the count. That is correct, not a bug.

NETWORKDAYS.INTL FAQ

How do I count working days with a Saturday working week?

Use weekend code 11, Sunday only: =NETWORKDAYS.INTL(start,end,11,holidays).

How do I count how many Mondays are in a month?

Use a string that marks every day except Monday as off: =NETWORKDAYS.INTL(start,end,"0111111").

What is the difference between NETWORKDAYS and NETWORKDAYS.INTL?

NETWORKDAYS always treats Saturday and Sunday as the weekend. NETWORKDAYS.INTL lets you choose the weekend days.
