Free Excel missing assignments tracker

For teachers who need to know, at any moment, who is missing what. Enter scores as they come in and leave missing work empty; the template counts each student's missing assignments that are already due, lists who has not turned in each assignment, and works out the share of points earned so far. Type EX for excused work and it is not counted as missing or as points possible.

19Leave a cell empty for missing work. Type EX for an excused assignment: it is not counted as missing and its points are left out of Points possible.

How the formulas work

Count missing work that is actually due

H4=SUMPRODUCT(($B$2:$G$2<=$B$13)*(B4:G4=""))

Two tests run across the row: is the assignment due by the date in B13, and is the score empty? Multiplying them turns TRUE/FALSE into 1/0, so only cells that pass both count. Work that is not due yet never shows as missing. Jonah has 3: HW 5, Quiz 3 and HW 6.

List who has not turned in each assignment

B17=IF(B$2>$B$13,"",IFERROR(TEXTJOIN(", ",TRUE,FILTER($A$4:$A$11,B4:B11="")),"Nobody"))

Under each assignment, FILTER picks the student names whose score cell is empty and TEXTJOIN joins them with commas, ready to read out or paste into a reminder. When nobody is missing it, FILTER returns an error, which IFERROR turns into Nobody. Assignments not due yet stay blank. Needs Excel 2021, Microsoft 365 or Google Sheets; the counts in column H work in every version.

Points earned so far, ignoring work not yet due

I4=SUMIFS(B4:G4,$B$2:$G$2,"<="&$B$13)

SUMIFS works sideways too: it adds the scores in the row whose due date is on or before B13. Work handed in early for Lab 2 is left out until Lab 2 is due, so the percentage cannot go over 100%. EX is text, and SUMIFS skips text.

Points possible, without excused work

J4=SUMPRODUCT(($B$2:$G$2<=$B$13)*(B4:G4<>"EX")*$B$3:$G$3)

Adds the point values (row 3) of every assignment that is due and not marked EX. Sofia was excused from the essay, so her possible points are 65 instead of 115. Missing work stays in the total, so it counts as zero in % earned.

FAQ

How do I track missing assignments in Excel?

Leave missing scores empty, then count empty cells for work that is already due: =SUMPRODUCT((due_dates<=as_of)*(scores="")). This template does that for every student and lists, under each assignment, who has not turned it in.

Should a missing assignment count as zero?

That is your grading policy, not an Excel rule. This template counts missing work as zero in % earned and leaves excused (EX) work out completely. If your school uses a minimum score, type it in instead of leaving the cell empty.

Why does the Who is missing it row show #NAME?

Your Excel version does not have FILTER (Excel 2019 and older). The Missing count in column H, Points earned and % earned work in every version; delete row 17 or upgrade to use the name lists.
