Free league standings template for Excel

For league organizers and team parents who post the table each week. List every fixture once with the home and away team; when a game is played, type the two scores. The standings work out games played, wins, draws, losses, goals for and against, goal difference, points and rank for every team. Unplayed games are ignored until they have a score. Points for a win, draw and loss are input cells, so the sheet fits soccer (3-1-0), hockey or any league with its own rules.

How the formulas work

Games played, counting only games with a score

H2=COUNTIFS($B$2:$B$41,G2,$D$2:$D$41,"<>")+COUNTIFS($C$2:$C$41,G2,$E$2:$E$41,"<>")

A team plays at home or away, so count both columns. The "<>" condition means "not empty", which skips fixtures that are scheduled but have no score yet. That is why the Hawks show 4 played even though their game on October 10 is already listed.

Wins from home and away games

I2=SUMPRODUCT(($B$2:$B$41=G2)*($D$2:$D$41<>"")*($D$2:$D$41>$E$2:$E$41))+SUMPRODUCT(($C$2:$C$41=G2)*($E$2:$E$41<>"")*($E$2:$E$41>$D$2:$D$41))

Each test is 1 or 0 for every row. The first SUMPRODUCT counts rows where the team is at home, the game has a score and the home score is higher; the second does the same for away games. Draws (J2) use the same idea with an equal score, and losses are simply played minus won minus drawn.

Goals for and against

L2=SUMIF($B$2:$B$41,G2,$D$2:$D$41)+SUMIF($C$2:$C$41,G2,$E$2:$E$41)

Goals for are the home score when the team is at home plus the away score when it is away. Goals against (M2) swap the score columns. Goal difference is for minus against.

Points from your league's rules

O2=I2*$S$1+J2*$S$2+K2*$S$3

Wins, draws and losses multiplied by the points in S1:S3. Change those three cells if your league gives 2 points for a win, or a point for a loss.

Rank with tiebreakers

P2=COUNTIF($O$2:$O$7,">"&O2)+COUNTIFS($O$2:$O$7,O2,$N$2:$N$7,">"&N2)+COUNTIFS($O$2:$O$7,O2,$N$2:$N$7,N2,$L$2:$L$7,">"&L2)+1

A team's rank is one more than the number of teams ahead of it. The three parts count teams with more points, teams level on points with a better goal difference, and teams level on both with more goals scored. In the sample the Rangers and Wolves both have 5 points; the Rangers rank 3rd on goal difference (+1 against -1). Teams level on all three share a rank. Leagues use different tiebreakers, so check your rules and swap the columns to match.

FAQ

How do I make a league table in Excel?

Keep one row per game with Home, Away, Home score and Away score. For each team, count wins with SUMPRODUCT over both the home and away columns, add goals with SUMIF, work out points from wins and draws, and rank with COUNTIF. This template has all of it built in.

How do I rank teams with a tiebreaker in Excel?

Add up the teams that are ahead: COUNTIF for more points, plus COUNTIFS for equal points and a better goal difference, plus 1. Add another COUNTIFS for each extra tiebreaker your league uses.

Why does a scheduled game not count in the table?

Every formula checks that the score cell is not empty, so a game only counts once both scores are typed. Type 0 for a team that did not score; leaving it empty means the game has not been played.
