Dates function

Excel MINUTE function

MINUTE returns the minute part of a time as a number from 0 to 59. Combine it with HOUR to rebuild or round times, or to turn a duration into minutes. It only reads the minute hand: 2 hours 35 minutes returns 35, not 155.

=MINUTE(serial_number)

Arguments

serial_number
A time, a date-time, a cell holding one, or a time in quotes such as "9:58".

  1. =MINUTE(B2)

    Result: 42

    Opened at 8:42, so the minute is 42.

  2. =MINUTE(C6-B6)

    Result: 25

    T-1005 took 25 minutes. This only works while the duration is under an hour.

  3. =HOUR(C3-B3)*60+MINUTE(C3-B3)

    Result: 155

    T-1002 took 155 minutes: 2 hours times 60 plus 35. =(C3-B3)*1440 gives the same in one step, since a day has 1,440 minutes.

  4. =TIME(HOUR(B5),FLOOR(MINUTE(B5),15),0)

    Result: 1:15 PM

    Rounds 1:17 PM down to the quarter hour, 1:15 PM, for billing blocks. Use CEILING instead of FLOOR to round up.

How to use MINUTE

  1. Click the cell for the result.
  2. Type =MINUTE( and click the cell with the time.
  3. Close the bracket and press Enter.
  4. For total minutes in a duration, use =(end-start)*1440 rather than MINUTE alone.

Common MINUTE mistakes

Reading a long duration with MINUTE

For 2:35, MINUTE returns 35 and drops the 2 hours. Total minutes are (end-start)*1440.

Seconds pushing a minute over

MINUTE never rounds: 8:42:59 is still 42. Round the time first with MROUND if you need the nearest minute.

Times past midnight

If a shift ends after midnight, end-start is negative. Use MOD(end-start,1) before MINUTE or *1440.

MINUTE FAQ

How do I convert hours and minutes to minutes in Excel?

For a time or duration in A2, use =A2*1440. Or build it from parts: =HOUR(A2)*60+MINUTE(A2).

How do I round a time to the nearest 15 minutes?

Use =MROUND(A2,"0:15"). To always round down use =FLOOR(A2,"0:15"), and to round up =CEILING(A2,"0:15").

Why does MINUTE return 0?

The time is on the hour, or the cell holds a date with no time part, or a whole number of days, which has no minutes.
