How the formulas work
Product charge before commission
Many salons take a small percentage off service sales to cover the color, developer and back-bar product used on clients, and pay commission on the rest. Set B9 to 0 if you do not. Ana's $5,720 has a $286 product charge, so commission is paid on $5,434.
Tiered commission, one slice at a time
The first $3,000 earns 40%, the slice from $3,000 to $5,000 earns 45%, and anything above $5,000 earns 50%. MIN caps each slice and MAX(0, ...) keeps a slice at zero when sales never reach it. Ana: $1,200 + $900 + $217 = $2,317.
Retail commission
A flat rate on product sales. Some salons pay a higher retail rate to encourage recommendations; change B10 and every row updates.
Total pay for the period
Service commission plus retail commission plus tips. Tips are kept in their own column so each stylist sees the full picture while B22 shows the commission the salon itself pays.
What commission really costs you
Service commission divided by service sales. With tiers and a product charge it is not any of the headline rates: here it is 39.8%, under the 40% first tier, because of the product charge. Use it when you price services, since it is the share of each service dollar that goes to the stylist.
Make it yours
- Make the tier steps match the pay period. Weekly steps on a two-week pay period pay out tier 3 far too easily.
- Pay rules for commission staff, such as minimum pay per hour and overtime, depend on where you are. Check them with your payroll provider; this sheet only does the commission math.
- Pull service and retail sales from the same report in your booking software every time, so refunds and discounts are handled the same way.
- Model a pay plan change by copying the sheet and editing A6:B10. Compare B21 on both copies before you decide.
FAQ
How do I calculate tiered commission in Excel?
Split sales into slices and multiply each slice by its rate: =MIN(sales,3000)*40%+MAX(0,MIN(sales,5000)-3000)*45%+MAX(0,sales-5000)*50%. Put the steps and rates in cells so you can change them without editing the formula.
What is a product charge or back-bar fee?
A percentage of service sales some salons deduct before calculating commission, to cover the professional products used during services. If your salon uses one, set the percentage in B9; if not, set it to 0.
Should tiers apply to each slice or to all sales?
Both plans exist. Slice-based tiers pay the higher rate only on sales above each step, so pay rises smoothly. All-sales tiers pay the reached rate on everything, which creates big jumps at each step. Whichever you use, write it down and show stylists the formula.
