How the formulas work

Total each type of asset with SUMIF

C17=SUMIF($B$3:$B$15,$A17,C$3:C$15)

SUMIF adds the balances in this month's column whose type matches the label in A17. The mixed references matter: $B$3:$B$15 and $A17 stay put, while C$3:C$15 moves to D, E and so on when you copy right. One formula fills the whole grid.

Net worth is assets minus debts

C22=C20-C21

Total assets (cash, investments and property) minus total debts. Debts are typed as positive balances, the amount you owe, and subtracted here, which is easier to read than negative numbers. In the sample, net worth rises from $152,900 to $171,630 over six months.

Monthly change and percent change

D24=IF(C22=0,0,D23/ABS(C22))

Row 23 subtracts last month's net worth from this month's. The percentage divides by the absolute value of last month, so the sign still means up or down even if your starting net worth is negative, which is common with student loans. The IF avoids a divide-by-zero error in the first month.

Debt-to-asset ratio

C25=IF(C20>0,C21/C20,0)

Total debts divided by total assets. 0.75 means you owe 75 cents for every dollar you own. Watching it fall month by month is often more motivating than watching net worth itself, because paying down a loan shows up even when markets dip.

FAQ

How do I calculate net worth in Excel?

Add up everything you own (account balances and estimated values of property), add up everything you owe, and subtract: =total assets - total debts. With a Type column, SUMIF can total each group so one sheet tracks all of it.

How often should I update my net worth tracker?

Monthly works well for most people: once at the end of each month, using the balance shown on that date. Updating daily mostly records market noise.

Should retirement accounts count toward net worth?

They are assets you own, so this template counts them. Some people also track a version without them, or without property, to see what they could use soon; row 26 shows net worth without property for that reason.
