Excel opens to a blank grey screen: how to see your workbook

First: is a workbook open at all?
A grey area where the grid should be, with most ribbon buttons greyed out, means Excel has no visible workbook. That's normal right after closing the last file. The question is whether the file you double-clicked is open but hidden, open somewhere you can't see, or never opened at all.
Two quick checks tell you. Click the View tab and look at Switch Windows: if your workbook's name is listed, it's open. And look at View > Unhide: if it's clickable rather than grey, there's a hidden workbook window. The table above lists each test and where it leads.
1. A hidden workbook window: View > Unhide
Excel can hide a whole workbook window with View > Hide. If someone did that and saved the file, it opens hidden every time. This is different from a hidden sheet: the tab menu can't help, because there's no window to show the tabs in.
If the Unhide list only shows PERSONAL.XLSB, leave that one hidden; it's your Personal Macro Workbook and it's meant to stay out of sight. Your own file isn't hidden, so move on to the next fix.
- Go to View > Unhide.
- Select your workbook in the list and click OK.
- Press Ctrl+S, so the file is saved with its window visible and opens normally next time.
2. Opens grey only when you double-click: the DDE setting
Test it: open Excel on its own and use File > Open to open the same file. If that works but double-clicking in File Explorer or an email gives you a grey window, Excel isn't receiving the file name from Windows. The most common cause is a setting that tells Excel to ignore those messages.
If that setting was already off, the file type may be linked to the wrong program. Right-click the file, choose Open with > Choose another app, pick Excel, tick Always use this app to open .xlsx files (the wording varies a little by Windows version) and click OK. You can also set it under Windows Settings > Apps > Default apps by searching for Excel.
- In Excel, go to File > Options > Advanced.
- Scroll down to the General section.
- Untick Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE).
- Click OK, close Excel, and double-click the file again.
3. The window is minimised or off screen
If View > Switch Windows lists the file but you can't see it, its window is minimised inside Excel or positioned off screen, often after unplugging a second monitor. Go to View > Arrange All, choose Tiled and click OK; every open workbook is resized to fit the visible screen. Then double-click the workbook's title bar to maximise it.
If the whole Excel window is off screen, click Excel on the taskbar to select it and press Windows+Up arrow to maximise it on the current screen.
4. An add-in, or a damaged Office install
Some add-ins load at startup and get in the way of the workbook window. Hold Ctrl while you start Excel and click Yes to open in safe mode, then open the file with File > Open. If it shows normally, go to File > Options > Add-ins, choose COM Add-ins in the Manage box, click Go, untick them all and turn them back on one at a time until the grey screen returns.
If even safe mode shows grey with every file, repair Office: Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps, the three dots next to Microsoft 365, Modify, then Quick Repair. Run Online Repair if Quick Repair doesn't fix it. Repair doesn't touch your workbooks. If Excel hangs rather than staying grey, the Excel not responding guide is the better fit.
Common mistakes
Looking for the missing workbook with the sheet-tab Unhide
A hidden window needs View > Unhide. The tab menu only unhides sheets inside a visible window.
Unhiding the workbook but not saving it
Press Ctrl+S after unhiding, or it opens hidden again next time.
Reinstalling Office first
Check View > Unhide and the DDE setting first. They fix most grey screens in seconds.
Unhiding PERSONAL.XLSB and saving it visible
If you unhid it by mistake, select it and use View > Hide, then close Excel and save when asked.
FAQ
Why does Excel open but not show my spreadsheet?
The workbook window is hidden, minimised or off screen, or Excel ignored the file name because of the DDE setting. Try View > Unhide, then View > Arrange All, then untick Ignore DDE under File > Options > Advanced.
Why is everything greyed out when I open Excel?
Most ribbon buttons are grey when no workbook is visible. Open or unhide a workbook and they come back.
How do I fix Excel opening a blank window when I double-click a file?
Go to File > Options > Advanced, scroll to General and untick Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE). If that's already off, set Excel as the default app for .xlsx files.
Excel opens a blank grey screen on my second monitor. What do I do?
Use View > Arrange All to pull the workbook window back, or select Excel on the taskbar and press Windows+Up arrow to maximise it on the current screen.
