Shortcut to go to the last row, column or cell in Excel

Quick answerPress CtrlDown arrow on Windows or CommandDown arrow on a Mac to jump to the last filled cell in the column. CtrlEnd goes to the last used cell on the whole sheet, and CtrlHome back to A1.

Ctrl+Arrow vs Ctrl+End

CtrlDown arrow moves down the current column until the next change between filled and empty. In a column with no gaps, that is the last row of data. CtrlRight arrow does the same along a row.

CtrlEnd ignores the active column and goes to the corner Excel thinks the sheet uses: the lowest used row and the rightmost used column. That cell can be empty.

Why Ctrl+Down stops early

A blank cell stops it. Press it again to jump over the gap, or use a column that has no blanks, such as an ID column, to find the true last row. Stopping at a gap is useful too: it shows you exactly where your data has a hole.

Why Ctrl+End goes too far

Excel remembers cells you used and then cleared. Deleting the contents is not enough; delete the extra rows and columns entirely (select them and press Ctrl-), then save the workbook. Excel resets the last cell when the file is saved.

On a MacBook

Why a shortcut sometimes does nothing

macOS shortcuts that get there first

Microsoft marks a few Mac shortcuts as clashing with macOS: ShiftF11 and F11 with Show Desktop, and CtrlSpace with switching input sources. Control with the arrow keys moves between Spaces and opens Mission Control by default too. If macOS reacts instead of Excel, open System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts and turn the macOS one off.

Excel for the web: the browser takes some keys

In a browser, a few keys belong to the browser first: F1 opens the browser's help, CtrlO opens a file, CtrlW closes the tab, and F6 moves around the browser. Excel for the web uses CtrlF6 instead of F6, CtrlAltPage Down for the next sheet in Chrome, and AltWindows key with a letter for ribbon tabs. To get desktop behavior back, go to Help > Keyboard Shortcuts and select Override browser shortcuts. If the file opened in Viewing mode, editing shortcuts do nothing until you switch to Editing.
