ROUNDDOWN examples
Every result below was calculated live from this sample sheet.
| A | B | C | D | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Product | Stock | Pack size | Price |
| 2 | AA batteries | 250 | 12 | 7.489 |
| 3 | Tape rolls | 98 | 6 | 3.996 |
| 4 | Zip ties | 1460 | 100 | 5.25 |
Result: 20
250 batteries fill 20 full 12-packs. The leftover 10 do not make a pack.
Result: 3.99
Keep two decimals with no rounding up: 3.996 becomes 3.99.
Result: 1400
Negative digits round down to hundreds: 1460 becomes 1400.
Result: -7
ROUNDDOWN moves toward zero, so -7.8 becomes -7.
How to use ROUNDDOWN

Common ROUNDDOWN mistakes
Confusing it with INT on negatives
ROUNDDOWN(-7.8,0) is -7, but INT(-7.8) is -8. INT always goes to the lower number.
Thinking it is the same as formatting
Formatting a cell to 2 decimals rounds to the nearest. ROUNDDOWN actually changes the value and never rounds up.
Leaving out num_digits
Both arguments are required. Use 0 to drop all decimals.
ROUNDDOWN FAQ
How do I round down in Excel?
Use =ROUNDDOWN(A1,0) for a whole number, or set the second argument to keep decimals.
How do I remove decimals without rounding in Excel?
Use =ROUNDDOWN(A1,0) or =TRUNC(A1). Both chop off the decimals without rounding up.
What is the difference between ROUNDDOWN and INT?
They match for positive numbers. For negatives, ROUNDDOWN goes toward zero (-7) while INT goes down to the lower integer (-8).
