ISERROR examples
Every result below was calculated live from this sample sheet.
| A | B | C | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Store | Revenue | Visits |
| 2 | Downtown | 18400 | 920 |
| 3 | Airport | 9600 | 0 |
| 4 | Mall | 12750 | 510 |
| 5 | Outlet | 4300 | closed |
Result: TRUE
TRUE, because dividing by zero visits gives #DIV/0!.
Result: 20
Shows revenue per visit, or "No data" when the math fails.
Result: TRUE
TRUE again. Dividing by text gives #VALUE!, and ISERROR catches every error type.
Result: TRUE
TRUE when a store is missing from the list.
How to use ISERROR
- Click the cell for the result.
- Type =ISERROR( and the formula or cell to test.
- Press Enter to see TRUE or FALSE.
- Wrap it in IF to choose what to show instead.
Common ISERROR mistakes
Writing the formula twice inside IF
IF(ISERROR(x),"",x) calculates x twice. IFERROR(x,"") does the same job in one step.
Hiding errors you should fix
ISERROR treats a typo #NAME? the same as a missing value. Check the formula works before you mask errors.
Only wanting to catch #N/A
Use ISNA or IFNA so other errors still show up.
