How to check if a cell is blank in Excel
=IF(A2="","Blank","Not blank"). The ="" test is TRUE for empty cells and for formulas that return "". ISBLANK(A2) is stricter: it is TRUE only for a truly empty cell, and FALSE if the cell holds a formula, even one that shows nothing. To test for not blank, use A2<>"".Sample data
Every result on this page was calculated from this sheet by the same spreadsheet engine the Cellwise app uses.

IF a cell is blank, return something
Compare the cell to an empty string, "". If it is empty, IF returns the second argument, otherwise the third. Here the follow-up column already does this: tasks with no completion date say Chase.
This is the test to use in most formulas, because it treats an empty cell and a formula that returns "" the same way, which is usually what you mean by blank.
Result: Not done
Returns "Not done", because C3 is empty.
ISBLANK and formulas that return ""
D2 looks empty, but it holds a formula that returned "". ISBLANK checks whether a cell has any content at all, and a formula counts as content. So ISBLANK(D2) is FALSE while D2="" is TRUE.
That catches people out when one column is built from another. If you chain a check onto a formula column, use ="" or LEN(D2)=0. Keep ISBLANK for the rare case where you need to know that a cell has truly never been filled in.
Result: FALSE
Returns FALSE, even though D2 shows nothing.
Cells that look blank but hold a space
B4 has a single space in it, typed by accident or left by an import. Neither ="" nor ISBLANK sees it as blank. Wrap the cell in TRIM, which removes spaces, and check the length.
Use this version on any data that came from a form, an export or copy and paste.
Result: No owner
Returns "No owner", because B4 contains only a space.
IF a cell is not blank
Flip the test with <>, which means not equal to. A2<>"" is TRUE when the cell has anything in it. Use it to fill a column only on rows that have data, so the rest of the column stays empty instead of showing zeros or errors.
Result: Closed
Returns "Closed", because C4 has a date.
Check several cells at once
Use OR when any blank cell should trigger the result, and AND when all of them must be filled. Row 5 has a completion date but no owner, so it is flagged.
For a long row, counting is shorter: =IF(COUNTA(A5:C5)<3,"Incomplete","OK"). Note that COUNTA counts formulas returning "" and cells with a space as filled.
Result: Incomplete
Returns "Incomplete", because B5 is empty.
Return a blank instead of 0
A formula that points at an empty cell returns 0, not a blank. =C3 shows 0, and a chart or average will treat it as a real zero. Return "" when the source is empty to keep the result empty too.
Result: "" (empty text, so the cell looks blank)
Returns an empty string rather than 0.
Common mistakes
Using ISBLANK on formula results
ISBLANK is FALSE for any formula, even one showing nothing. Use D2="" or LEN(D2)=0.
Writing =IF(A2=" ",...) with a space
" " is a space, not empty. Use two quotes with nothing between them: "".
Comparing to 0 to test for blank
A2=0 is TRUE for an empty cell, but also for a real 0. Use A2="" so genuine zeros are not treated as missing.
Spaces and non-breaking spaces from imports
Use LEN(TRIM(A2))=0. If that still fails, the cell may hold character 160: clean it with SUBSTITUTE(A2,CHAR(160),"") first.
FAQ
What is the difference between ISBLANK and ="" in Excel?
ISBLANK is TRUE only for a cell with no content at all. A2="" is TRUE for an empty cell and also for a formula that returns an empty string. Use ="" in most formulas.
Why does ISBLANK return FALSE when the cell looks empty?
The cell contains something invisible: a formula returning "", a space, or an apostrophe. Click it and check the formula bar.
How do I leave a cell blank if there is no value?
Return an empty string: =IF(A2="","",A2*1.2). The result looks empty, though ISBLANK and COUNTA will still see a formula there.
How do I count blank cells in a range?
Use =COUNTBLANK(A2:A100). It counts empty cells and formulas returning "", but not cells containing a space.
